Kitchen Styles

Remodeling is a major investment in your home, so it’s vital to consider styles and ideas that you’ll love now as well as for many years to come.

Traditional Kitchens

A traditional kitchen is formal and homey all at once. It’s also comfortable and inviting. Traditional spaces are anything but cookie-cutter. Homeowners have the freedom to experiment with design elements that resonate with their unique tastes.

The main feature of a traditional style kitchen is the attention to detail and use of decorative accessories. Look for things like wainscoting on the island, crown moldings, corbels and furniture-like pieces with embellishments. Everywhere you look in a traditional kitchen, it will be chock-full of embellishments, detail and decorative finishes that ask to be admired.

A traditional style kitchen can pull styles from all places and time periods. As long as the item is ornate, unique or vintage, it will probably fit in a traditional room.

Detail, detail, detail. Traditional kitchen cabinetry is full of it. Perhaps the most telltale indicator of a traditional kitchen is the style of cabinetry used. Recessed and raised panel doors tend to be at the top of the list. Natural material countertops, such as granite and butcher block, are the most common work surfaces in traditional kitchens.

Transitional Kitchens

Transitional kitchen style is best described as balanced. The transitional look takes the warm and welcoming nature of traditional kitchens and pairs it with the simplicity found in more modern designs. It’s clean and laid-back.

With sleek lines and sharp features, many transitional kitchens also incorporate crown moulding, subway tiled backsplashes and statement range hoods. You’ll find natural materials such as wood and stone blended with various textures and colors. Pendant lighting is very common in transitional kitchens. Playing on the classic chandelier, an industrial and oversized pendant light works well as a more modern focal point.

When done correctly, mixing and matching traditional and modern elements is one of the best ways to create a fashion-forward transitional kitchen design.

Transitional cabinetry is typically streamlined and subdued. Transitional cabinets keep it simple. Classic shaker-style doors are great for that clean look. Usually transitional cabinets have very little decorative detail. Similar to the cabinetry, the hardware is normally minimal and modest to complement the cabinetry design.

Farmhouse Kitchens

Modern farmhouse style is a bit less rustic than the classic. The modern style adds more contemporary touches like a neutral color scheme and smooth lines verses the classic aesthetic which has barn-style doors, shiplap walls and faux rustic accessories.

While the classic farmhouse style tends to lean more on the side of warm tones and neutrals, modern farmhouse tends to invite more whites, pastels and off-whites for a brighter look. Classic kitchens will include natural wood accent, apron sinks and vintage furniture, while the more modern version adds elements like stainless steel appliances, granite countertops and rustic lighting.

In recent years, the classic farmhouse style has evolved into a modern farmhouse.  Both styles share a lot of similarities, but each offers a unique take on the style.

Whether classic or modern stye, the most prominent feature of a farmhouse style kitchen is its classic cabinets. Bulky, rustic open shelving is consistent with the modern farmhouse. Unvarnished wood shelves are the most popular choice. In the less rustic modern style, look for antique-white or light painted cabinets.

Contemporary Kitchens

The contemporary style kitchen is a highly popular design concept that has been readily embraced by homeowners. A kitchen styled in a contemporary fashion incorporates a mixture of new and old and casual yet polished elements to give a sleek aesthetic.

Contemporary kitchens are typically unadorned and free of excess detailing. Rather, the focus tends to be on artistic juxtaposition and the complementary relationship between materials, surfaces, and colors. Unexpected details like concrete flooring, brushed silver knobs, strategically and artfully placed chrome and lacquer detailing, and tiny pops of color offer an industrial vibe softened by visual appeal.

When decorating a contemporary kitchen, the sky is truly the limit. There is no standard blueprint for a contemporary-styled kitchen; rather, the design is defined by minimalist decorating, a clean aesthetic, strong and bold color choices, and an emphasis on embracing the unexpected.

In essence, a contemporary kitchen allows the materials from which it is constructed to stand out and shine while offering inviting physical and visual sensations that create a sense of calm, tranquility, and peace.
